Living in Victoria, BC (Canada) has a few perks.

Second to Salem, Massachusetts (the world capital of witchcraft), Victoria, BC is Canada’s “most haunted house city”.

This “California-North”, left-coast, cosy community with the unique distinction of being dubbed Canada’s “garden city”, it also has something else strange going for it.

According to the most recent Canadian census,it seems that Victoria has the largest per-capita witch population in the country. In fact, more than 1,000 folks filled out a form declaring themselves truly “out-of-broomstick the-closet”! However, more optimistic estimates, by the local pagan and witch community, put this figure closer to 5,000!

Even though Statistics Canada has stated that paganism is the fastest- growing religion in the country, Victoria has earned the novel title of being one of the few places in the country where witches can legally marry, wear witch attire in public, (and die) in grace.

So what makes Victoria such a “happening Halloween place” all-year round?

Some have said, it is Victoria’s strategic location on the San Andreas fault line. (The “energy of the place” makes it a great spot for those who like to feel the earth tremble beneath their web-feet — it also rains here).

Other’s say it has to do with the ocean (and perhaps far too many seagulls leaving their telltale signs behind to guide the ghosts around at all hours of day and night).

But most scientists agree, it probably has something to do with the very strange sort of people who live here (namely a high proportion of hot-air politicians, and alternative lifestylers who enjoy wearing point-black hats, hob-nailed hiking boots, and riding recycled broomsticks to work in Beacon Hill Park (a place where pentagrams can be worn openly without anyone batting an eye).

But hold on now — there’s something missing. After all, what would Halloween be without a little “scream cuisine”?

Cancer involves mutations, or changes, in genes. In most people affected by cancer, these genetic changes happen after birth later in life. In Hereditary Cancer, the cancer is caused by a genetic mutation that the person was born with. Some cancers, such as breast, ovary and colon tend to be hereditary, but that doesn’t mean that you will develop a cancer in one of these areas if you have an immediate family member that has experienced the disease. Not all genetic mutations will develop into cancer, however, the mutation will increase the chance that the person will have a higher risk of developing cancer.

Only 10% of all breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary. Some of the factors that increase the occurrence of hereditary breast cancer are breast cancer before age 45, male breast cancer, cancer in both breasts and many cases of breast and/or ovarian cancer on one side of the family. If you have two relatives from the same side of your family with breast cancer, your risk of getting the disease can be increased. However it does not mean that you will definitely get breast cancer. You also must keep in mind that the risk for hereditary cancer can be passed on from your mother or your father. You must look at both sides of the family.

The two hereditary mutations that are looked at for breast cancer are BRCA1 and BRCA2. The test for these two genetic factors are done by taking a blood sample. Both of these BRCA mutations (BReast CAncer 1 and 2) are associated with breast and ovarian cancers.

So what factors should you consider when thinking about genetic testing? The age and onset of breast cancer. What other types of cancer are present. What other family members have/had cancer and their relationship to you. When you meet with a genetic counselor, they will go over your family’s medical history and information. This will include first-degree relatives, such as your parents, siblings and children. second-degree relatives like grandparents, aunts and uncles and your third-degree relatives or cousins.

Genetic testing can help a breast cancer patient make decisions about types of treatment and follow-care. A woman with the one of the BRCA mutations may decide to have both breasts removed completely to help reduce the risk of reoccurrence. Having your healthy breasts or ovaries removed to prevent cancer is called a “prophylactic surgery” and many women who test positive for the genetic mutations decide to go that route. They may just decide to take Tamoxifen to lower their risk.

Not only can women take advantage of risk reduction techniques based on the results of their genetic testing, there are also increased surveillance tools that can help high risk individuals with early detection. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasound are two tools that can be combined with a mammogram to detect breast cancer in its most treatable stage.

Not every person who carries a genetic mutation will develop cancer. You must remember that genetic testing does not detect breast cancer and it will not tell you if you will get breast cancer in your lifetime. The decision to participate in genetic testing is very personal and there is no right or wrong choice in making the decision to have it done.

Alzheimer’s disease most often affects those over 65. It is

filaments (neurofibrillary tangles) and patches of degenerative
nerve endings, called senile plaques are found. It is believed
that these abnormalities cause a disruption of the electrical
impulses in the brain.

It is a devastating disease, robbing the individual of their
memories and ability to recognize their loved ones or care even
to complete simple tasks for themselves, but there are
treatments available to help slow the course of Alzheimer’s
disease and researchers are working hard to find a cure.
Understanding the stages of the disease is the key to both.

There have been a number of attempts to describe the disease
using a medical model but for caregivers and the rest of us it
is easier to use the seven step functional stages to understand
the changes brought on by the progression of the disease.

Stage 1 is described as a normally functioning adult without
noticeable symptoms and no changes in memory.

Stage 2 is often mistaken as part of the normal aging process.
The individual notices their declining memory issues and some
functional loss as well. They may have trouble remembering the
names of familiar people and places.

Stage 3 is defined as early Alzheimer’s disease. There is
progressive difficulty with involved tasks in demanding
situations and often growing anxiety and denial. Memory and
recall difficulties become apparent, concentration becomes
effected and there is generally a loss of productivity.

Stage 4 or mild Alzheimer’s, disease is characterized by a
flattening of mood and continued denial of the disorder.
Familiar faces, following directions to frequently visited
places and orientation of persona and place are still intact,
but assistance with complicated tasks becomes necessary.

Stage 5 Alzheimer’s disease is considered moderate and the
person in this stage can no longer get along in daily life
without the assistance of others. They can remember major
information about them selves and others but recall of newer
information is difficult. An individual at stage 5 needs
assistance picking proper attire and making most decisions.

Stage 6 is considered moderately severe and people begin to
forget large amounts of information about themselves and others
including the names of their spouses and children. They will
need help with all the activities of daily living and disturbed
sleep patterns becomes problematic and delusional or obsessive
behavior, acute anxiety and violent behavior can arise.

Stage 7 is the last stage of the disease, and in severe
Alzheimer’s disease speech is reduced to only a few words and is
mostly unintelligible. Individuals lose their ability to sit up
or walk. They cannot smile and even lose their ability to hold
up their heads. The brain seems unable to direct the movement of
the body.

Alzheimer’s disease isn’t curable but there are treatments that
can slow its progress and promising research that may one day
lead to a cure. Understanding the stages of the disease and its
progression can help those who are afflicted, their loved ones
and researchers ensure the best treatment now and promote hope
for the future.

Forget about the SAT, never mind the FCAT, and remove forever from you mind any thoughts about the ACT. All these test pale in comparision to the examination that I just failed. Failing those test may have minor repurcussions like never making it into college and therefore being forced to work at fast food resturants well into you 40’s. That’s nothing. This morning I was doing my usual morning ritual of checking my email and all my affiliate programs to see if I had made any money online yesterday. This morning, however, I stumbled across a real winner. I came across a link that I just had to click. I was at JokesUnlimited.com reading redneck jokes when I saw ‘Fun Quizzes: Can you guess which butts are male or female?

From the extreme look of excitement in your eyes I can tell that you feel the same way I felt when I saw the Butt Quiz link. My first thought was: ‘Pictures of female butts! Yeeeessss! And it’s a quiz so I don’t have to feel dirty about it. It’s educational! Yeeeesssss! I immediately clicked the link and started my quiz.

In hindsight(no pun intended), the expression ‘Fools Rush In’ comes to mind. I blindly rushed into this quiz in a testosterone induced urge to look at female hindparts and I forgot to think the whole thing through. I forgot to take a moment and reflect. I forgot that there were going to be male hindparts on the quiz too. Hairy male hindparts. In thongs.

Needless to say, I failed the quiz. I got 8 out of 15 right. That’s about 60 percent. An ‘F’ in almost all 50 states. Even New Jersey. I, Tim Ward, humor columnist and straight male could not distinguish between the gluteus maximus of the male and female gender. I started to wonder: Were some of the butts that I said were female really male? If so, does that mean I find some men’s butts attractive? Do I have a male butt fetsih that I didn’t know about? Do I secretly enjoy slapping guys on the butt after a good sports play? And what about the woman’s butts that I classified incorrectly? Has it really been that long since I’ve seen a bare female behind? Am I forgetting what the female body looks like?

All these questions have been running through my head since I failed my first Butt Quiz. It got to the point where I’m thinking about scheduling a retest. But this time I’ll be sure to plenty of studying in advance. So ladies, if you see me taking large hard looks at your posterior region, I’m not a pervert, I’m just doing a little research. And to the fellas, forgive me if I give more that the usual amount of congratulatory butt slaps on the basketball court for awhile. I’m just trying to further my education…And maybe work through a fetish or two.

Almost everyone agrees that digital cameras offer plenty of advantages over film cameras, and consumers are voting with their wallets as they continue to buy digital cameras in record numbers. If having the best image quality is important to you then you want to look for digital cameras that save their files in TIFF, GIF and RAW formats as these do not sacrifice any image quality when compressing the image file for storage. On the other hand, the JPEG image format that many cameras use will cause some loss of image quality in the file compression part of saving the image file.

When deciding what digital camera to buy, much of your decision will revolve around how you plan to use the camera and the resultant image files, and what features are most important to you and the way you shoot your photos.
